Welcome to Week Eight of my reflections on what I've learned this week in class. This week, we learned about program accessibility and how it is achieved, and watched a video on the benefits of recreational and leisure activities. The video below is a reflection on Iowa Recreation Services' outdoor programming.

Outdoor programs and events are weather-dependent and may be cancelled in the event of severe weather, extreme temperatures, or poor air quality for outdoor activities. Contact 311 if you are uncertain about weather cancellations.

Program Accessibility and How It Is Accomplished?

Approach: We need to offer programming that includes individuals with disabilities and allows them to participate fully, with their needs taken into account.

Inclusion Process:

Step One: Program Promotion
Step Two: Registration Process and Assessment of Needs
Step Three: Accommodation and Support
Step Four: Staff Training
Step Five: Program Implementation
Step Six: Documentation
Step Seven: Evaluation

Social Integration in Recreation Activities

  • Frequent and consistent opportunities to get acquainted
  • Equal status
  • Mutual goals
  • Cooperation and interdependence
  • Receiving accurate (not stereotyped) information about the person with a disability
  • Fair and tolerant norms

Developing friendships

  • Promote social integration to foster reciprocal relationships, regardless of whether individuals have a disability or not.
