Welcome to a week 7 recap of what I have learned so far this week. This week, we have learned about physical accessibility and facility accessibility.
Physical Accessibility: Recreation facilities that are accessible and barrier-free for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to enter and approach the facilities freely without any barriers or impediments.
Accessibility Framework:
- Approach
- Enter
- Use
- Conveniences
The framework is designed to help individuals with disabilities ensure an inclusive environment that allows them to enter the facility without obstacles, have an accessible network, and provides accommodations for individuals with disabilities in all programming.
The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Canadian Disability Act are very much one and the same to protect the needs of those with disabilities. They focus on the uniform standards of the act for accessibility in Canada and the USA.
Disability rights of Americans and Canadians:
- Employment - Do not discriminate against those with disabilities. (includes all employment actions)
- Government - Shall not exclude those with disabilities and let them participate in all government benefits, including all programs, services, and activities.
- Transportation - Provide transportation that includes accommodations for all disabilities.
- Business/Public Accommodations- Provide goods and services and facility use to the public and must not discriminate on the basis of disability and services.
- Communications - Public and private businesses must provide services that are accessible to all individuals with disabilities and accommodate their communication needs.
